>> there's been a few acts at that intersection, and i was thinking that was probably the case. never thought in a hundred years that somebody had been shot. >> reporter: investigators say alcohol may have played a factor in the accident. officers were investigating the car crash where you see the car down at that duty. that's when investigators were led down the street, off tackets mill road and confronted the suspect. >> have after stafford deputies entered the residence and an altercation ensued with a 17- year-old male who was wielding a naff and attacked one of the deputies. the male subject was subsequently shot and died at the scene. >> reporter: the injured deputy was treated at the scene. >> the officer did receive a wound. >> reporter: since the crash happened on the county line, fauquier county deputies called stafford county for assistance. the shooting happened about a quarter of a mile from the crash, and six houses down from jessica's home. >> times have change.

>> reporter: surae chinn, 9news now. >> now we know the name of the man shot and killed by d.c. police this morning. investigators say they were called out to 17th street northeast responding to a report of a man attacking his granddad. that man turned out to be 28- year-old justin turner and detectives say turner attacked an officer from behind with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the head and neck. what's the the officer, they say, turned and fired his weapon and killed turner. that officer was treated and released from the hospital. they are accused of stealing cash intended to help kids, right here in our area to fund their own luxurious lifestyle. tonight a u.s. attorney announces a 31-county indictment against local youth boxing director keely thompson junior and his wife bye annika. prosecutors say the couple spent hundreds of thous sards of grant money on car, cruises, gambling, even renting a ferris wheel for a house party. on to superstorm sandy

where new york city has now canceled the marathon. that's one of the biggest sporting events of the year but at least 41 new yorkers died in the super symptoms, and nearly half of them on statten island. hundreds need food and water, and they say help just isn't coming fast enough. >> reporter: the new york city marathon is the latest victim of superstorm sandy. the city canceled after public backlash. some complained the marathon would take police away from areas still recovering from the storm. the mayor issued a statement saying we cannot allow controversy over an athletic event to distract attention away from the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm. many of those affect agreed. >> life changes. you can't -- sometimes you've got to cancel things. there was no halloween. >> reporter: sandy's force is very visible on steapt island where the marathon was supposed

to start. in gray kills harbor, boats are piled on top of each other. homes are boarded up, some with signs begging for help. >> we've been completely devastated. >> reporter: hundreds are suffering. they say the city, state, and federal government is ignoring them. >> no one has really been here to help us. we need help. >> reporter: this distribution site in staten island relies on donations and people bringing in everything from clothes to blankets to much needed food. in manhattan, gas lines stretch for blocks for cars and containers. >> you've got get gas, you've got to wait, right? >> reporter: but there is some good news for drivers. the holland tunnel has reopened for commercial vehicles and buses. cbs news, staten island, new york. now a bit more on that canceled marathon. the folks who were helping with the race have shifted their focus. now they're helping out of town runners who no longer need their hotel rooms to donate

responded to the numbers. >> unless we change course, we may well be looking at another recession. >> we've made real progress but we are here today because we know weave got more work to do. >> president obama spending his day campaigning in 0 hio mitt romney in way. only four days to go until we go to vote, both men spending the weekend trying to sway the undecided. the rising unemployment numbers do not bode well for veterans coming home from overseas so today at a joint base anacostia bowling in d.c. scott broom got a look at what's facing employers and veterans as they try to make a match with each other. >> reporter: they call this job fair at joint base anacostia bowling "hiring our heroes." >> they've got the integrity, the work ethic that people are looking for. >> reporter: this is where veterans have traded uniform for business suit, although some are still wearing their stripes. >> we have over 60 employers.

>> reporter: lieutenant colonel kathleen is organizing these job fairs nationwide for the u.s. chamber of commerce. she talks about the challenges for veterans. >> mill terry person has been deployed, is coming back, and the job in their local community may already be taken so they really have a disadvantage. >> reporter: unemployment for post-9/11 veterans has been declining but remains above national average. >> it's difficult and somewhat stressful. >> reporter: francis roberts retired from the army national guard after 22 years as an officer. she now seeks a second car rather as a human resources executive. >> it's a different mind set, and that is the challenge, is getting out of a military type mind-set where you're always focused, and you're always moving towards something, and then you come into the civilian sector, and they may not move as fast as what you have been trained to move at. >> reporter: so far the hiring

some new fines go into effect monday for d.c. speedsters caught on speed camera. folks going 1 to 15 miles per hour over will have their fines reduced but if you are going more than 25 mails over will you pay an extra 50. there's track work on the metro beginning tonight through sunday. the orange, blue, and red lines will be impacted. the rosslyn and arlington cemetery stations will be shut down. and supporters of public tv will take to the streets of washington in what is being called the million puppet march. it's all in response to mitt romney's plan to eliminate funding for pbs. the rally begins at 10:00 a.m. atright now. topper isage minutes to tell you about that chilly forecast. plus, fighting childhood obesity. how one maryland hospital is helping overweight kids live

in tonight's health alert we continue our spotlight on america's obesity epidemic. 12 million kids are overweight and that's putting those kids at risk for diseases that usually only adults get.

danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: 14-year-old devon is here for his weekly weigh- in. devon has struggled with his weight since he was a toddler and today he's battling high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prediabetes. >> i wouldn't do as much. i would stay home and play games and not do things with my friends and things. >> reporter: but devon is working to turn his life around with doctor, nutritionists, and more. >> it's not just about johnny has a weight issue. it's about changing the behaviors of the family. >> the weigh smart program is 10 weeks of exercise and education at that time hospital's facilities. the program is so popular, there aren't any open spots for new patients until february of next year. >> our kids are the first generation of kids that may not outlive their parents because of obesity. >> what's your favorite? >> reporter: did he slip's

stupid super pacs have joined in. what happened to truth in advertising? after all, the candidates are selling themselves. they should be feigned for false political advertising. gross lies, 500 k. gross twisting of truth, 250k. those that irritate the heck out of me, 100k. yeah, i know aim dreaming but stranger things have happened. well, j.t., maybe some stranger things have happened but political speech ssks a first amendment right and everything from broken promises on down to outright lies would seem to be protected. but then there was this from mckinley in prince george's county would sure is trying to vote early. it was reported on your news channel this morning that early voting in maryland was repairing wait of 20 minutes to an hour. not true in parts of pg county. two of the early voting locations in prince george's, bowie and oxon hill public library, the wait is more like three hours. and? accommodation is being made for the elderly and or women with
